Under the patronage of the Deanship of the College of Engineering at Al-Nahrain University, and under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Architectural Engineering, and in support of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Department of Architectural Engineering organized a training workshop entitled “Integration of Functional, Technical, and Aesthetic Dimensions in the Design of Seating”, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit.
The workshop was held over the course of one week for fourth-year architecture students, with the aim of empowering students and linking the academic aspect with the labor market.
The workshop comprised three main themes:
First Theme – Theoretical Aspect (16-11-2025):
Students were provided with a series of theoretical lectures as follows:
• Dr. Alyaa Ahmed Mahmoud: “The Evolution of Seating Design – A Dialogue between Thought and Material”
• Dr. Zahraa Mohammed Mousa: “Technological Development in Seating Design between Function and Aesthetics”
• Dr. Nada Azzam Mahmoud: “Design Potentials of Seating in Revitalizing Urban Space”
• Eng. Sara Ali Sahib: “Labor Market Challenges in the Design and Manufacturing of Seating”
Second Theme – Practical Aspect (18-11-2025):
Students presented a range of outputs representing design proposals for seating. These included a poster illustrating the design concept and a three-dimensional scale model clarifying the idea at a scale of 1:10.
Third Theme – Scientific Field Visit (16-12-2025):
A scientific visit was conducted to Oxygen Carpentry Workshop, where students became acquainted with the stages of the seating manufacturing process.
The workshop achieved several key outcomes, most notably:
• Linking creative thinking with practical application and familiarizing students with labor market challenges.
• Developing creative thinking skills and enhancing hands-on experience in dealing with raw materials.
• Encouraging students to develop a sense of human scale and to design in response to it.
