As part of its ongoing efforts to establish occupational safety standards and provide a safe academic environment, the Computer Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Nahrain University, held a training and awareness workshop entitled "Fundamentals of Firefighting and Fire Safety." The workshop was presented by Mr. Tariq Abdullah Mahdi, Head of the Civil Defense Division. The workshop was held on Thursday, November 27, 2025, and targeted faculty members, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in the department, with the aim of enhancing their preparedness to deal with sudden emergencies. Key topics covered in the workshop included: Theoretical Aspects: This included defining different types of fires and their classification methods, and explaining safe evacuation procedures for buildings in the event of a fire. Practical Training: This focused on the proper and effective use of the fire extinguishers available in the department's facilities, and the procedural steps to protect equipment and laboratories from fire hazards. The department head emphasized the paramount importance of such workshops in protecting lives and property, especially in technical environments containing sensitive equipment and laboratories, stressing that safety is a shared responsibility requiring continuous awareness and preparation. Organizing this workshop aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), which focuses on promoting safety and preventing risks through raising awareness and providing training in emergency procedures, thus contributing to a safe learning environment that safeguards the well-being of students, faculty, and administrative staff.
