The Computer Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Nahrain University, held a workshop titled:

"An Introduction to Sustainable Smart Cities." This workshop was part of the department's programs aimed at enhancing engineering awareness of modern technologies and supporting the university's focus on sustainability and innovation.

The workshop was presented by Dr. Shaimaa Waleed Abdul Latif.

The workshop was attended by a number of faculty members, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students interested in the fields of smart cities and sustainable energy.

The workshop included a comprehensive explanation of the concept of smart cities and their role in improving quality of life through the integration of advanced technology with the management of infrastructure and urban services. The lecture also addressed the most prominent globally adopted sustainable strategies, such as smart energy management, environmentally friendly transportation networks, monitoring and control systems, and the Internet of Things (IoT) and its role in building more efficient and safer future cities.

The workshop also showcased case studies of sustainable city projects around the world, discussed the challenges facing the transition to smart cities in developing countries, and presented future visions for the potential application of these concepts within local urban contexts.

The workshop concluded with an interactive discussion session among the attendees, during which ideas and proposals were exchanged to enhance the role of Iraqi engineers in adopting smart and sustainable solutions, in line with the rapid advancements in digital transformation and modern infrastructure.

Organizing this workshop aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which aims to develop smart, safe, and sustainable cities by leveraging modern technologies and improving the efficiency of resource and infrastructure management, thereby contributing to a better quality of life and enhanced urban sustainability.
