Under the direct patronage and blessing of the Custodian of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbala’i, and with the support of the Dean of the College of Engineering and the Head of the Department of Architecture at Al-Nahrain University — and in an effort to strengthen academic cooperation between the holy shrines and architecture departments, as well as to support, sustain, and promote traditional crafts to preserve local identity —
The Department of Architecture at Al-Nahrain University organized a workshop for undergraduate students titled:
“Sustainability of the Craft: The Art of Karbala Tile Making.”
This event was held in collaboration with the Maintenance Department of the General Secretariat of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein, and with the participation of Dr. Haider Naji Atiya, an architect from the Department of Architecture at the University of Karbala.
The workshop comes as part of the continuous efforts of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein to preserve the architectural heritage and authentic identity of the holy city of Karbala and its traditional architecture. It also aims to pass down the knowledge and skills of this authentic building craft to new generations of architecture students, and to highlight this art through architectural design.
The event included an introductory lecture on the history and evolution of Karbala tile making, followed by a practical workshop that demonstrated the detailed stages and techniques of this unique traditional art.
At the conclusion of the event, the Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Nahrain University presented letters of appreciation to Dr. Haider Naji Atiya from the University of Karbala and to the Engineering Maintenance Department of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein, in recognition of their efforts in reviving the art of Karbala tile making and supporting students in the practical aspects of their studies
