The Department
of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Engineering at the College of
Engineering – Al-Nahrain University organized on Thursday, October 16, 2025, a
scientific workshop entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Bias.” The
workshop, presented by Assistant Lecturer Wasf Abdul-Hamid Taha, addressed one
of the major ethical challenges in the field of artificial intelligence, namely,
the bias that results from using unbalanced data or algorithms, which can lead
to unfair or discriminatory decisions. The
presentation explored the concept of algorithmic bias and its multiple sources,
such as data bias caused by weak representation of diverse groups, design bias
resulting from focusing on accuracy without fairness considerations, and human
bias reflecting the developers’ beliefs and assumptions. It also included practical
case studies, such as facial recognition systems that showed varying accuracy
across demographic groups, and Amazon’s hiring system, which revealed gender
bias against female applicants. The
workshop further discussed the social and ethical implications of algorithmic
bias, emphasizing the need to establish legal and regulatory frameworks that
ensure transparency and accountability in AI applications.
In
conclusion, the workshop highlighted that building fair and inclusive
artificial intelligence requires an integration of both technical and ethical
dimensions to ensure that AI systems serve society justly. The session
witnessed distinguished academic attendance and engaging interaction from
faculty members, featuring insightful discussions on the role of universities
in promoting digital justice and developing transparent, responsible AI
systems.
