About the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering/College of Engineering/Al-Nahrain University
The Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering is one of the modern engineering departments with a rare specialization in Iraq. It was established in 2013 after studying the need of the market to provide specialized expertise in the field of care for people with special needs, both ordinary and complex situations due to the exceptional circumstances experienced by our dear country. The activities of the department include three main areas: academic education program, scientific research and community service. The first batch of students was graduated in the academic year 2016-2017.
Academic Education Program
The academic education program includes a curriculum of four years program aimed to provide the student with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills needed to qualify him to be at the level of (category 1) according to the classification of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO). The curriculum plan includes courses with medical and engineering specializations, in addition to the required courses of the prosthetics and orthotics which represent the basic curriculum of the study plan. The total curriculum hours are 3300 hours which divided as follows: medical courses (25%), prosthetics and orthotics courses (35%), engineering courses (30%), and general courses (10%). The practical hours constitute about 45% of the total curriculum hours. The education program is subject to periodic review to assess its quality and achieve its educational goals through the system of quality assurance of higher education in the college and university.
