The Master’s student Ghufran Mohammed Ismail defended her thesis in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering – Al‑Nahrain University on Sunday, March 1, 2025. Her thesis was entitled: “Development of an Impedance-Based Biosensor for NTX Detection as a Biomarker of Bone Resorption.” The examination committee consisted of: Asst. Prof. Dr. Aseel Mohammed Ali Hussein – Chair Asst. Prof. Dr. Sura Fouad Abdul Ameer – Member Dr. Mona Mustafa Karim – Member Asst. Prof. Dr. Rana Ibrahim Mahmoud – Member and Supervisor Dr. Samar Ali Jaber – Member and Supervisor This study aims to develop a low-cost and portable sensing system for the early detection of bone tissue degradation associated with osteoporosis. The system detects the NTX biomarker using a biosensor based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) technology, while measuring electrical impedance changes through Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The results demonstrated that the proposed system is capable of detecting NTX with good efficiency. The measurements showed good agreement with reference methods, including ELISA and DXA, indicating its potential use as an auxiliary tool for early screening and monitoring bone health.
The thesis was accepted as it fulfilled the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering.
