On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the Department of Computer Engineering at the College of Engineering – Nahrain University held the defense of the Master’s thesis submitted by the student Zahraa Sami Abdul Amir, entitled:

“Integrating Mobile Edge Computing with IoT to Enhance Resource Management in Smart Cities.”

This research addresses the challenges of processing latency-sensitive tasks in Internet of Things (IoT) environments, particularly considering the limited resources of IoT devices and the reliance on distant cloud computing. The study proposes a Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) framework that employs a dynamic scheduling algorithm taking into account task priority and latency constraints.

The research introduces the PWRR/LC algorithm for efficient task scheduling within a single-server MEC environment. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in reducing waiting time, increasing the number of completed tasks, and improving resource utilization.

The study also contributes to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by improving the efficiency of resource management in smart city infrastructures through advanced computing and IoT technologies.

The thesis examination committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Shukr – Chair

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Faeq – Member

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Shaimaa Safaa Al-Din – Member

The thesis was supervised by Lecturer Dr. Ayman Jaber Salman.

At the conclusion of the defense, the committee commended the scientific efforts presented in the thesis and the student’s academic performance, highlighting the innovative ideas and modern applications included in the research, which contribute to supporting smart city initiatives and advanced computing technologies.
